Spot de Liencres

Liencres

Liencres

Overview

Liencres (Valdearenas) is the most consistent spot in Cantabria — works when other spots are flat. Located next to the protected Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres, a spectacular sand dune natural park.

The spot offers two completely different experiences: the ocean side (Valdearenas) with punchy beach breaks and A-frame tubes; and the estuary side, where at high tide a perfect flat water lagoon fills behind the dunes — standing-depth throughout, sandy bottom, minimal chop even in strong wind. This makes it one of the rare spots in northern Spain suitable for both beginners and wave riders.

Spot functioning

Ocean side: Works with NW, NE, W. E wind is cross-shore — ideal for kite. Best tides: low and mid-tide. The beach faces NW — catches all Atlantic swells.
Estuary side: High tide fills the flat water lagoon — perfect for freestyle and beginners. Even in very strong wind, minimal chop. The lagoon drains at low tide. Spring/summer NE thermal works great. Autumn/winter NW/W depressions work too.

On the water

Ocean: Strong waves, beach breaks, sandy bottom. Currents present.
Estuary: Flat water, standing-depth, sandy bottom. Some rocks at low tide. Grass areas for rigging up. Water 14-21°C. Combi 3/2 summer, 4/3+ winter.

Parking

Large car park — but packed in summer (can be a small odyssey to find a spot). Access signposted from the main road to Liencres.

Wind specificities

E — Cross-shore. Spring/summer. Stable, anticyclonic. Best wind for kitesurf at Liencres — ideal beach for this direction.
NE — Side-on. Spring/summer. Thermal, stable. Works great both ocean and lagoon side.
NW/W — Autumn/winter. Gusty, powerful. Ocean waves can be heavy. Lagoon works well as sheltered alternative.

Hazards

⚠️ Ocean side: strong waves and currents — not for beginners on the ocean beach.
⚠️ Estuary side: rocks visible at low tide — be careful. Obvious rocks on the beach, large parts of estuary run dry at low tide.
⚠️ Summer parking can be a nightmare — arrive early.
