Playón de Bayas (El Sablón) is the best kitesurf spot in Asturias. At 2.8 km, it's the longest beach in the region, backed by a spectacular protected dune system and the Isla de la Deva (Natural Monument). Joins with Playa de los Quebrantos at the Río Nalón estuary to the south, forming a 3+ km coastline.
NE wind blows stronger here than at neighbouring spots and comes nicely cross-shore. Waves are generally clean but mid-sized. Southern launch at Los Quebrantos offers smaller waves (submerged breakwater) and small flat water lagoons at certain tides. Visible from the plane when landing at Asturias airport!
NE is the main wind — stronger here than neighbours due to local acceleration. Cross-shore, clean. Works all tides. NW-W winter swells bring more powerful conditions. Southern access at Quebrantos has smaller waves (submerged breakwater) plus tidal lagoons for flat water options.

Sandy bottom, beach breaks with shifting peaks. Clean waves, mid-sized usually. Good lefts near the jetty area. Consistent swell — 7/10. Water 13-21°C. Springsuit summer, 4/3 winter. Uncrowded in the water (4/10). Defibrillator at rescue service.
Main access: Large parking lot (100+ spots) next to the beach. Packed in summer. Access via A8 west from Gijón, past Avilés, take AS-239 to La Arena and follow signs to Playón de Bayas.
Alternative access: North of Asturias airport — less crowded parking.
NE — THE wind for Bayas. Stronger here than neighbours. Cross-shore, clean. Spring/summer thermal + anticyclonic. Mountains nearby shelter other spots but Bayas catches NE well.
NW-W — Winter storms. Powerful swell, stronger conditions. All tides.
N — Onshore. Can be heavy.
⚠️ Both launch areas slightly rocky in places — check before setting up.
⚠️ Strong waves and exposed coast — not for beginners.
⚠️ Protected natural monument (Isla de la Deva, dune complex) — respect the environment, no access to dune systems.
⚠️ In summer, sun-worshippers take over the beach — kiting limited.
