Overview

Theewaterskloof Dam is the largest reservoir in the Cape water supply system, set in a mountain valley near Villiersdorp about 100 km from Cape Town. This vast body of water offers impressive space for kitesurfing when water levels are sufficient. Surrounded by the Franschhoek Mountains and the Hottentots Holland range, the wind is channelled through the mountain passes, creating powerful but sometimes turbulent conditions.

Technical details of Theewaterskloof dam spot

Spot currently open :-)
Spot functioning

Large freshwater dam that works with south-easterly (summer) and north-westerly (winter) winds channelled by the mountains. Water level varies considerably depending on season and drought years — check the level before making the trip. The sailing area depends on the chosen access point and water level.

Spot opening date

Open all year round

Required level

Intermediate

On the water

Freshwater, generally flat with a slight chop in strong wind. Variable depth depending on dam level. Water can be cold (14-18°C) due to altitude and mountain origin. Full wetsuit recommended year-round.

Parking

Access via dirt roads from the R45 between Villiersdorp and Franschhoek. Several access points around the dam, parking on natural ground. A vehicle with high ground clearance may be needed depending on track conditions.

Wind specificities

The wind is strongly influenced by the mountainous topography. The summer south-easterly and winter north-westerly are channelled through mountain passes, which can amplify their strength. Wind can be gusty and irregular due to terrain effects. Best conditions are usually in the afternoon when thermals strengthen. Gusts possible up to 35+ knots.

Hazards

Gusty and irregular wind due to mountainous terrain. Water level can be very low, exposing tree stumps, rocks and underwater obstacles. Isolated spot with no rescue nearby — never sail alone. Risk of thunderstorms with lightning in summer. Check water level before coming.
