La Poza de Somo is the bay/river side of Somo — where the Santander Bay meets the Ría de Cubas (Miera estuary). Flat water with small chop even in strong wind. Standing-depth at low and mid tide — ideal for courses and beginners (supervised). Both high and low tide work.
Works at both high and low tide. Low/mid tide: standing-depth, ideal for courses. High tide: deeper, need to upwind well. The area is the junction between Santander Bay and the Ría de Cubas — different water movements affect conditions. NE wind: cross-off, stable 12-17 knots but 2-3 knots less than ocean side.
Flat water with small chop. Sandy bottom except the rocky "El Machón" zone. Standing-depth at low/mid tide. Currents towards shipping channel and bay. Water 14-21°C.

Open all year round
Same access as Somo Beach — parking behind the beach. Walk to the bay side.
⚠️ ROCKS WITH OYSTERS (El Machón) — Very dangerous, extremely sharp. A vertical stone marker ("El Machón") marks a 50m rocky breakwater running towards the beach, and another 50m parallel to the beach. AVOID THIS ZONE! Ask locals for exact location.
⚠️ NAVIGATION PROHIBITED in marked channel (red/green buoys) parallel to Pedreña — ferries (pedreñeras) between Somo, Pedreña and Santander.
⚠️ In summer, area between the two chiringuitos is packed with boats and sailboats — navigate with care.
⚠️ HIGH TIDE DANGER — if you can't point upwind, you'll drift to Pedreña (wall, no access).
⚠️ NE = cross-off here. NOT recommended for beginners unaccompanied.
⚠️ E wind = Somo creates shadow, gusty. Risk of drifting into middle of bay.
NE — Cross-off. Stable 12-17 knots. 2-3 knots less than ocean. Danger at high tide if you can't upwind = drift to Pedreña.
E — Side-off. Gusty (Somo shadow). Best area past chiringuito towards El Puntal. Risk of bay drift.
NW — Side-off. Gusty 12-40 knots. Alternative: Pedreña or ocean beach.
W — Side. Stable. Good alternative to ocean side.
N — Offshore. Rare. Flat water close to shore. DANGER: if too far out and wind drops = drift to Pedreña (walls, no access).
SW — Side-on to onshore. VERY GUSTY — Pedreña acts as wall, wind funnels unpredictably. AVOID this zone with SW unless high level.
