Bolonia — legendary surf and wave spot 70 km west of Tarifa, near Trafalgar lighthouse. Good alternative when Levante exceeds 40 kts in Tarifa (10 kts less here). Beautiful bay with reef. Wave riding spot. Next to Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia. Advanced — reef, strong currents, waves.
The spot works mainly with two configurations:
With Poniente: West side-onshore wind, perfect and safe. Navigation across the entire width of the bay is possible.
With Levante: East wind hitting the bay head-on. Be aware of the slightly offshore character in some areas. Levante blows here almost as strong as in Tarifa.
The spot is tide-affected. At low tide, the beach extends considerably, offering more space for kite launching and landing.
Water type: Atlantic Ocean, entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar.
Bottom: Fine sand, safe.
Depth: Progressive, ideal for standing over a large distance.
With Poniente: Light chop and small waves.
With Levante: Flatter water, offshore wind smooths the waves.
Water temperature: Cool due to Atlantic currents. Recommended wetsuit: shorty or 3/2 in summer, 4/3 or 5/4 in winter. Temperatures vary greatly from day to day depending on currents.

Open all year round
Spot open all year, but riding banned in summer (approximately June 15 - September 15) on most of the beach for swimmer safety.
Best period: March to June and September to November to combine good wind conditions and authorized access.
Off-season, the spot is quiet and uncrowded - ideal conditions for peaceful riding.
Free parking accessible from the CA-8202 road. In summer, spaces become scarce and parking can be hard to find.
Off-season, the parking lot is usually empty and access is easy. Van and campervan parking is tolerated in winter.
Distance to spot: parking is located directly at the beach edge.
Regulations: Kitesurfing and windsurfing are banned in summer (June-September) on most of the beach. During summer season, prefer the southern part of the beach and follow signage.
Offshore wind: With Levante, the wind can be slightly offshore in some areas. Risk of drifting out to sea if something goes wrong - stay cautious and ride with others.
Rocks: Some rocks present on the sides of the bay. Be careful when riding upwind.
Crowds: In summer, the beach is very crowded with swimmers and tourists. Be vigilant when launching and landing.
Poniente (West): Side-onshore wind, steady and consistent, between 10-20 knots. Ideal for learning and relaxed sessions. Creates light chop.
Levante (East): Powerful thermal wind, side-offshore to slightly offshore depending on position on the beach. More gusty than Poniente, can reach 15-30 knots with peaks up to 40 knots on some days. Flattens the water.
In summer, a thermal west wind typically picks up around 2pm with forces up to 20 knots.
Note: Wind is generally lighter than in Tarifa, making the spot more accessible to intermediates.
