Castelldefels is the main kitesurf beach of the Barcelona area — a 5 km south-facing sandy beach just 30 min from Barcelona center by direct train (R2 to Vilanova, stop "Platja de Castelldefels"). 10 min from Barcelona airport. One of only 3 official kite zones in all of Catalunya where kite is allowed in summer. Wide sandy strip, shallow water near shore, no rocks, no currents — super safe, perfect for beginners. The thermal Garbí (SW) picks up around noon-13h, blowing 12-20 knots side-onshore. Strongest in spring when land is hot but sea still cold. Very changeable conditions — flat/chop on Garbí days, waves on E/W days. Mojokite school and shop on site. Chiringuitos, showers, nightlife. Off-wind day? Barcelona is 15 min by train, or hike in the Parc Natural del Garraf.

Season: Mid-February to mid-January (winter stop Jan-Feb). Best months: March-May and September-December.
Summer (June-Sept): Zone kite weekdays 15h-19h only. Thermal Garbí 12-18 kts. Foils from 7 kts, twintip from 14 kts.
Spring (March-May): BEST SEASON. Garbí strongest — land hot, sea cold. Wind picks up ~12-13h, stays good few hours. Good days most weeks.
Autumn (Sept-Dec): Excellent. Wind continues, less crowded, pleasant temps.
Hors saison: Kite libre sur toute la plage. More space, choose your spot.
Beginner
Flat to small chop with Garbí (SW) — very manageable. Bigger waves with E (Llevant) or W winds — more powerful conditions. Sandy bottom, no rocks, no currents. Shallow near shore. Water 21-23°C summer, 13-16°C winter. Boardshort/shorty summer, 3/2 spring/autumn, 4/3-5/4 winter.
Multiple parking areas along the promenade. Free in low season. Showers available. Access by car via C-32 direction Tarragona. GPS: Passeig del Ferrocarril 54, 08860 Castelldefels. Weekend parking can be tricky — come early. By train: R2 from Barcelona (Franca/Passeig de Gràcia/Sants) to "Platja de Castelldefels" — every 30 min, 2-zone ticket ~2.80€. Walk out of station, look left — you're there!
Garbí (SW thermal) — THE wind for Castelldefels. Side-onshore. Picks up ~12-13h. 12-20 knots, strongest March-May. Stable, gentle. Kites 10-12m most common. Flat/chop. Best wind for kite here.
E / NE (Llevant) — Onshore. Waves, more power. Stronger wind, 6-10m kites. More experience needed. Winter/autumn mainly.
W (Poniente) — Cross-offshore. Waves. Stronger. Experienced riders. Less frequent.
SE (Garbí variant) — Also good, slightly more onshore. Works well.
⚠️ Wind forecasts are generally accurate for Castelldefels — unlike Sant Pere where local thermals are underestimated.
⚠️ Summer zone rules (June-Sept): kite zone only ~300m, weekdays only (lun-ven), 15h-19h. Must pick up a lycra vest at the info desk. Need liability insurance covering kitesurf. Sign rules form. Beginners NOT allowed in summer zone — must be able to stay upwind.
⚠️ Enter/exit water ONLY through the designated channel (200m) — no going downwind.
⚠️ Rescue service summer 16h-20h.
⚠️ Swimmers sometimes don't respect the sailing channel — watch out.
⚠️ On rainy days vehicle access to beach may be closed — park nearby and walk.
⚠️ Weekend parking can be tricky — plan extra time.
