Overview

São Torpes is the main kite spot in the Sines area, on the Alentejo coast. When people say "Sines kite spot", they usually mean São Torpes. Easy to find thanks to the dramatic power station towers looming over the beach.

Despite the industrial backdrop, the sandy beach is popular with locals thanks to reliable cross-shore Nortada wind. Not quite as strong as Guincho or Sagres, but consistent. The power plant's cooling water flows into the sea between breakwaters, making the water a few degrees warmer — a unique bonus.

The northern end of the beach has breakwater protection, creating some shelter. Further south, the beach extends with open conditions. Needs a good swell for decent waves. Sandy bottom with beach breaks.

Within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Birthplace of Vasco da Gama. Sines town has the famous Músicas do Mundo festival every summer. Surf schools and beachfront cafés nearby.

Best season: May to September.
