Lagoa de Albufeira is a stunning lagoon just 40 minutes south of Lisbon, in Sesimbra. A wind lover's paradise offering the perfect mix of a protected lagoon and the open Atlantic.
The lagoon is separated from the ocean by a sandbar, creating chest-high flat water — ideal for beginners, freestyle and foiling. Those seeking waves can cross the sandbar to the ocean side. The east part of the lagoon (near Meira Pro Center) stays deeper and works even at lower water levels.
Wind: NW Nortada thermal, 15-20 knots from May to October. Consistent and reliable. The lagoon can get tricky in summer when water levels drop.
Beautiful natural setting with two notable restaurants: Restaurante Praia de Lagoa de Albufeira (lagoon views) and O Lagoeiro. Multiple kite schools including Meira Pro Center and South Adventures.
Best season: May to September.
Beginner
Open all year round
Shallow water: at low tide the lagoon can become too shallow, especially in summer when water levels drop.
Wind shift: gusty with south wind.
No wild camping: strictly forbidden around the lagoon.
