Martinhal is a long sandy beach near the tip of Sagres, about 1 hour drive from Lagos. Often called a speed and freestyle Nirvana.
The Nortada trade winds blow strong and steady here, slightly offshore, flattening all ripples on the water surface. When conditions align, this is one of the flattest spots in the Algarve — perfect for speed runs and freestyle tricks.
The beach only works in summer (June-September) when thermal winds are active. On good days, expect 18-25 knots of smooth, consistent wind.
Located near the Martinhal Sagres resort area — upscale family resort with restaurants and facilities. The end of the world feeling — Sagres was once thought to be the western edge of the known world.
Best season: June to September.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Swimmers: the beach gets busy in high summer with families. Kiting improves as wind picks up and clears the beach.
Offshore wind: Nortada blows slightly offshore — don't go too far out.
Summer only: no wind outside the thermal season.
