Spot de Punta Paloma

Punta Paloma

Punta Paloma

Overview

Valdevaqueros is arguably the most famous kitesurf beach in Europe, host to GKA World Championships. Located in a stunning bay 9 km from Tarifa, backed by the enormous sand dune of Punta Paloma. Kite allowed ALL YEAR without restrictions.

The Venturi effect between Europe and Africa makes Tarifa a wind machine — ~300 windy days per year. Two winds alternate: Levante (E) from the Mediterranean, warm, gusty, offshore, 15-40+ kts, flattens the water — more frequent in summer. Poniente (W) from the Atlantic, cooler, steady, onshore, 10-25 kts, brings waves — more frequent rest of year.

Valdevaqueros is the safest Tarifa spot for Levante: the bay curves, so the wind becomes side/cross-shore here instead of pure offshore. The dune catches drifting riders. A few knots stronger here than Los Lances. In weak Poniente, the dune thermal can be the only place in Tarifa with enough wind.

Punta Paloma = quieter extension, same conditions, schools teach beginners even in strong Levante. Beach bars (Tumbao), Spin Out center. Tarifa old town 10 min drive, with moroccan-influenced architecture, tapas bars, kite shops galore. Day trips: ferry to Tangier (Morocco), whale watching, Estrecho Natural Park.

Spot functioning

Year-round — ~300 windy days. Best: spring (April-June) and autumn (Sept-Nov) — best wind, less crowds, mild weather.
Summer (June-Aug): Levante dominant. Strong, hot. Very crowded. GKA events. Schools everywhere. Kite zones in summer at Valdevaqueros (rocky area — not ideal beginners, go Los Lances).
Winter (Dec-Feb): Poniente dominant. Colder (4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit). Waves. Occasional N and S winds. Less crowded. Great wave riding.
Spring/Autumn: IDEAL PERIOD. Both winds alternate. Less crowded. Good prices. Warm enough (3/2 or 4/3).
⚠️ Poniente days colder than Levante. 4/3 most of year, shorty summer Levante, 5/4 winter Poniente.

On the water

LEVANTE: Flat to small clean swell — beautiful turquoise water. Offshore flattens everything. Regular wave kickers for huge jumps. Dream conditions for big air. Deep from shore.
PONIENTE: Waves, chop, shore break. Onshore. Atlantic swell. Can be 2-4m waves in winter storms. Colder water. Better for wave riding and strapless.

Water temp: 18-22°C summer, 15-17°C winter. Wetsuit: shorty summer Levante, 4/3 most of year, 5/4 winter Poniente. Sandy bottom, some rocks at edges of Valdevaqueros.

Currents: Mediterranean meets Atlantic here — significant currents. Understand the drift direction before going out. Africa visible on clear days.

Parking

Multiple paid parking lots near Valdevaqueros beach and Punta Paloma. Beach bars nearby. From Tarifa: N-340 direction Cádiz, 9-10 km. Punta Paloma = further end, quieter. Parking tricky in peak summer — arrive early or know the hidden spots.

From airports: Jerez de la Frontera (JER) ~1.5h, Gibraltar (GIB) ~45min, Málaga (AGP) ~2h. Tarifa town has accommodation for all budgets — from beachfront hotels to guesthouses in the old town. La Manga campsite near Arte Vida.

Hazards

⚠️ LEVANTE = OFFSHORE — even here the wind comes from land. If anything goes wrong, you drift towards Africa. Rescue card MANDATORY on Levante days. Buy from kite shops or beach bars (~€40 for 2 rescues).
⚠️ Levante ultra gusty close to shore — you may have to fight your way out, then kite better further outside.
⚠️ Rocks at both ends of Valdevaqueros and underwater — be aware of your position.
⚠️ Very crowded in summer (June-August) — schools, beginners, tourists, lack of designated zones between bathers and kiters. Chaos.
⚠️ Poniente can bring big waves and strong shore break — entering/exiting tricky.
⚠️ Strong currents where Mediterranean meets Atlantic — understand the drift.
⚠️ Summer kite area at Valdevaqueros is in the rocky section — Los Lances better for summer learning.
⚠️ If Poniente is slightly NW, dune of Punta Paloma disturbs the wind — entry into water difficult.

Wind specificities

LEVANTE (E) — The legendary wind. Warm, from the Mediterranean. 15-40+ kts, gusty close to shore, steadier outside. Offshore/cross-offshore at Los Lances, side-onshore at Valdevaqueros/Punta Paloma (safest). Flattens the water. Kites 5-12m. More frequent summer. Can last 3-10 days straight. Can drive you crazy with gusts. RESCUE CARD MANDATORY.

PONIENTE (W) — The friendly brother. Cool, from the Atlantic. 10-25 kts, steady and constant. Onshore/cross-onshore. Brings waves and chop. Kites 9-14m. More frequent outside summer. Best for beginners and learning. Poniente boosted by thermal effect at Punta Paloma dune — sometimes the only spot with wind.

THERMAL — On sunny Poniente forecast days, Valdevaqueros can pick up thermal wind around midday even when forecast is light. Big kites (13-15m).

N / S — Occasional winter. N = offshore Los Lances, S = offshore Valdevaqueros. Rare.

⚠️ Live wind meters not always accurate — check on-beach conditions. K Wind App, Windguru (Campo de Fútbol + Valdevaqueros stations), Spotfav cameras.
