Overview

Keystone is a kitesurfing spot on Whidbey Island, at the Fort Casey ferry terminal, in Admiralty Inlet. This spot is exposed to some of the strongest tidal currents in Puget Sound. The area offers technical conditions with formed chop when wind opposes current. The historic Fort Casey State Park setting adds to the location's charm. Advanced level required due to powerful currents and exposure.

On the water

Admiralty Inlet with very cold saltwater (7-12°C/45-54°F). A 5/3mm wetsuit with hood and gloves recommended. Very formed chop when wind opposes tidal current. Currents among the strongest in Puget Sound (up to 4-5 knots). Rocky and sandy bottom. Conditions change rapidly with the tide.

Hazards

Extremely strong tidal currents in Admiralty Inlet — rapid drift possible. Keystone-Port Townsend ferry traffic — stay clear of the ferry route. Very cold water — hypothermia. Submerged rocks. Fort Casey is a state park — pass required. Technical conditions requiring proficiency in self-rescue.
