Stevenson is a kitesurfing spot on the Columbia River in the Gorge, on the Washington side. Located across from Cascade Locks (Oregon), this area benefits from powerful thermal winds that funnel through the Gorge from the west during summer. The river offers flat water to moderate chop conditions. Stevenson is in the western part of the Gorge where thermal winds begin to strengthen. Spectacular setting between the forested cliffs of the Columbia Gorge.
Open all year round
Intermediate
River riding on the Columbia with cool fresh water (12-18°C/54-64°F in summer). A 3/2 to 4/3mm wetsuit depending on season. Flat water to moderate wind chop from thermal winds. Moderate river current. Rocky to sandy bottom. River width allows good runs but watch the current.
Gorge thermal winds can be very strong and gusty, especially in the afternoon. Columbia River current can carry riders downstream. Barge and boat traffic — stay alert. Submerged rocks near the shores. Cold water in spring and fall. Thunderstorms possible in summer.
