Overview

Ramp 38 is a National Park Service 4WD beach access ramp south of Avon on Hatteras Island. It's one of the southernmost ramps before the Buxton area. This ocean beach section is wild and uncrowded, part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Good wave kiting conditions with plenty of space. Ramp 38 is often used as a starting point for downwinders along the beach. ORV permit required.

Atlantic ocean waves. Variable shore break. Sandy bottom with shifting sandbars. Good conditions in NE to SE side-shore winds. Very spacious and uncrowded beach section. Ideal for downwinders north or south.

Hazards

4WD access — ORV permit required. Rip currents possible. Shore break can be powerful. Stingrays. Jellyfish in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning possible in summer. If doing a downwinder, organize return logistics in advance.
