Overview

Shipwreck is a kitesurfing spot on Oregon's northwest coast, near Warrenton and Fort Stevens State Park. The evocative name refers to the many shipwrecks that dot this section of coast, testimony to the formidable maritime conditions of the region. The beach is wide and wild, exposed to powerful North Pacific swells. Northwest winds are regular in summer. This spot offers a unique atmosphere with a sense of isolation and ocean power.

On the water

Cold water year-round (10-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit minimum in summer, 5/3 in winter. Powerful waves of 1 to 3 meters with Pacific swell. Sandy bottom with possible debris from historic shipwrecks. Very powerful rip currents in this zone influenced by the Columbia River mouth. Conditions can change rapidly with tide and swell direction.

Historically dangerous zone for navigation: numerous shipwrecks testify to extreme conditions. Columbia Bar influence: powerful and unpredictable currents. Very dangerous sneaker waves. Possible metal debris on beach or in shallow water (shipwreck remains). Violent rip currents. Massive driftwood. Very cold water risking hypothermia. Frequent fog. Isolated spot with distant rescue services.
