First Turnout is a soundside spot on Hatteras Island, the first roadside turnout along NC Highway 12 when arriving from the north toward Avon. Parking is roadside with direct access to Pamlico Sound. The water is very shallow and flat, perfect for learning and freestyle. It's a convenient and quick sound access, popular with kitesurfers passing along the road between spots.

Flat water on Pamlico Sound — ideal conditions for learning and freestyle. Very shallow for a long distance. Sandy bottom. Water is warm in summer. Large body of water with plenty of space. Predictable and consistent conditions.
Stingrays — do the stingray shuffle. Sea nettles (jellyfish) in summer. Oyster shells possible — water shoes recommended. Proximity to NC Highway 12 — careful with gear transport. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer.
