Waves Oceanside is the Atlantic-facing spot of the village of Waves on Hatteras Island. The beach is wide and exposed to east swells, offering good wave conditions. Waves being one of the narrowest villages on the island, it's easy to switch from sound to ocean in just a few minutes. The spot is ideal when wind is side-shore (NE to SE) for combining kitesurfing and waves. Access is from the village via public paths to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore beach.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Ocean waves with swells from east to southeast. Moderate shore break on this section of beach. Sandy bottom with shifting sandbars. Best wave kiting conditions are in NE to SE winds. Longshore current can be present — watch your drift. Beach is wide at low tide offering space for launching.
Rip currents possible. Shore break can be powerful in large swell. Stingrays in shallow water. Sea nettles (jellyfish) in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning possible in summer. Watch for longshore current that can cause drift along the beach.
