Planet of the Apes is a soundside spot with an evocative name, located between Salvo and Avon on Hatteras Island. The name comes from the wild and desolate appearance of the sound side area, with dead trees and stumps emerging from the water, resembling a post-apocalyptic landscape. The spot provides access to Pamlico Sound with flat and shallow water. It's an intermediate spot as the bottom can be more irregular with stumps and debris. Unique and wild atmosphere for adventurous riders.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Flat water on Pamlico Sound with a bottom that can be more irregular than other spots. Shallow depth but presence of tree stumps and submerged debris in some areas near shore. Once past the shoreline, the water opens up to classic conditions. Good freeride conditions once past the coastal zone.
Tree stumps and submerged debris near shore — collision risk during launching and landing. Ride away from shore once launched. Stingrays present. Sea nettles (jellyfish) in summer. Sharp oyster shells — water shoes essential. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer. Isolated spot — ride with a buddy.
