Topsail Beach is the town at the southern end of Topsail Island. The beach faces south and southeast toward the Atlantic. Topsail Beach is quieter than Surf City, with a family atmosphere. The island's southern end is close to New River Inlet, creating interesting conditions with dynamic sandbars. The name "Topsail" comes from pirates who watched for merchant ship sails ("top sails") from the island's dunes. Important sea turtle nesting site.
Ocean waves with SE to S swells. Moderate to strong shore break near the inlet. Sandy bottom with dynamic sandbars. Sandbars near New River Inlet create interesting wave conditions. Tidal current influenced by the inlet to the southwest.
