Marine Drive is a kitesurfing spot located on the Columbia River in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. This urban spot offers easy river access from Marine Drive road that runs along the south bank of the Columbia. Although located outside the gorge proper, the spot still benefits from westerly thermal winds that travel up the Columbia valley. It is the most accessible spot for riders in the Portland metro area.
Fresh water from the Columbia River, cool to temperate (13-20°C in summer). 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in spring and fall. The river current is moderate in this wider, calmer section. Surface generally flat with slight chop during thermal winds. Thermal winds are less powerful than upstream in the Gorge, generally 15-25 knots. Wide waterway offering plenty of space to ride.

Heavy river traffic near Portland: barges, tugboats, and recreational boats. Proximity to Portland International Airport (PDX): do not use signal kites. River current that can carry riders. Power lines crossing the river in some areas: check before riding. Cold water outside of summer. Regulated navigation zones near the Port of Portland.
