Overview

Ramp 27 is a National Park Service 4WD beach access ramp between Salvo and Avon on Hatteras Island. This ramp provides access to a wild section of the ocean beach in Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The area is isolated and offers excellent wave kiting conditions when wind is favorable. Ramp 27 is close to Planet of the Apes on the sound side, allowing riders to choose between ocean and sound based on conditions. ORV permit required.

Atlantic ocean waves. Variable shore break. Sandy bottom with shifting sandbars. Best conditions in NE to SE side-shore winds. Uncrowded beach section offering plenty of space. Possibility of downwinders along the beach north or south.

Hazards

4WD access only — ORV permit required. Rip currents possible. Shore break can be powerful. Stingrays. Jellyfish in summer. Very isolated beach — ride with a buddy. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning possible in summer.
