Nicholson Ave is a kitesurf spot located in Waveland, at the western end of the Mississippi coast, on the Mississippi Sound. The beach offers direct access to the shallow Sound waters in a quiet residential setting. Waveland, heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, has rebuilt its waterfront. The spot benefits from good exposure to south and southwest winds, with a body of water protected by the offshore barrier islands.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Shallow Mississippi Sound water with sandy bottom. Flat to slightly choppy water, well protected by the barrier islands. Warm water in summer (28-30°C). The western position of the spot may offer slightly different conditions with more influence from the nearby Bay of St. Louis. Good for progression and freestyle.
Jellyfish in summer. Sudden tropical thunderstorms with lightning — leave the water immediately. Hurricane zone from June to November. Possible underwater debris, legacy of past hurricanes. Tidal currents possible near the mouth of Bay St. Louis. Bottom sometimes muddy.
