Second Turnout is a soundside spot on Hatteras Island, a roadside turnout along NC Highway 12 between Avon and the northern spots. Access is easy with parking right by the road and a few steps to Pamlico Sound. The body of water is vast and shallow, perfect for flat water kitesurfing. The bottom is mainly sandy. It's one of many convenient sound accesses that dot Route 12 along Hatteras Island.

Flat water on Pamlico Sound — ideal conditions for learning and freestyle. Very shallow with sandy bottom. Water is warm in summer (78-86°F). Vast body of water with plenty of space. In SW wind, conditions are perfectly flat.
Stingrays in shallow water — do the stingray shuffle. Sea nettles (jellyfish) in summer. Oyster shells possible — water shoes recommended. Proximity to NC Highway 12 — watch for traffic. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer.
