Overview

Point Betsie is a kitesurf spot located on an exposed cape on Lake Michigan, near Frankfort, Benzie County, Michigan. The historic Point Betsie Lighthouse, one of Michigan's most photographed, dominates the landscape. This point jutting into Lake Michigan offers excellent exposure to west and northwest winds with considerable fetch. Waves are regular and powerful, making this one of the best surf spots on the Great Lakes.

On the water

Lake Michigan water body on an exposed cape. West to northwest winds generate waves of 1 to 2.5 meters thanks to considerable fetch. Excellent wave spot for the Great Lakes. Cold water — full wetsuit required except in midsummer. Sandy bottom. The point position concentrates waves and can create more powerful conditions than surrounding beaches.

Hazards

Strong currents around the point, including longshore and rip currents. Powerful waves in strong west winds. Cold Lake Michigan water with hypothermia risk. Rocks possible near the lighthouse. Relatively remote area — bring safety equipment. Violent thunderstorms possible in summer with lightning risk — exit water immediately.
