Access 48 is an ocean beach access point in the north Avon area of Hatteras Island. Unlike the 4WD ramps, this access is on foot from a roadside parking lot. The beach is wild and part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The spot offers classic Atlantic wave conditions. Good access point for riders without a 4WD vehicle who want to ride on the ocean side in the north Avon area.

Atlantic ocean waves. Moderate to strong shore break depending on swell. Sandy bottom with shifting sandbars. Good conditions in NE to SE side-shore winds. Walk-in access — plan for carrying gear from the parking lot.
Rip currents possible. Shore break can be powerful. Stingrays in shallow water. Sea nettles (jellyfish) in summer. Gear must be carried on foot some distance. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning possible in summer.
