Grand Isle is Louisiana's main coastal kitesurf spot, located on the only inhabited barrier island accessible by road in the state. This 8-mile long island on the Gulf of Mexico offers a continuous beach on the south side with direct access to Gulf waves, and flat water on the bay side to the north. Grand Isle is a premier destination for sport fishing and Louisiana beach tourism. Grand Isle State Park at the eastern tip offers the best conditions with parking and facilities.
Gulf side: moderate waves in south swell, progressive sandy bottom. Warm water year-round (24-30°C). Bay side: flat water ideal for freestyle and learning. Longshore currents present on the ocean side. Low amplitude tides. Water can be murky due to Mississippi River sediments.

Longshore currents on the Gulf side. Sharks frequent in Gulf waters. Jellyfish in summer. Grand Isle is on the front line for hurricanes — the access road is often closed and the island evacuated during hurricane season. Sudden tropical thunderstorms. Offshore oil platforms sometimes alter currents. Watch for residual pollution after oil spills.
