Workum / IJsselmeer is one of the premier kitesurfing destinations in Europe — not just in the Netherlands. Located on the western IJsselmeer shore in Friesland, the spot offers ~200–300m of shallow water (hip-depth) before a sandbar, followed by deeper IJsselmeer with short choppy waves. Huge grass area and sandy beach for rigging. Right side: kiters; middle: swimmers (buoy line); left: windsurfers. Atmosphere is relaxed and communal.
⚠️ Crowd rules: max 150 kites simultaneously — red flag = kitesurf stopped. Max 30 lesson kites in the air at once. June–August: launch and land in the water only, kite zone is north of the beach. Check the yellow flag post for updated rules. ⚠️ E wind = offshore → unstable and dangerous, do not launch. Kitesurf permitted year-round. Kiteshop Core 'n More on site. 4★ camping It Soal adjacent (shower, supermarket, restaurant).
Core 'n More kiteshop on site (gear, repairs, rentals). Sky High Watersports (school at Workum). KiteMobile (mobile school). Antix Sports (mobile school). Multiple IKO/KNWV certified schools operating June–September with municipal permit.
Right side of beach for kiters, centre for swimmers (buoy line), left for windsurfers. June–August: mandatory water launch and landing. Yellow flag post = current rules board. Kite zone north of beach in summer. Red flag = stop kiting immediately. Kite schools must be registered with the municipality (June 1 – Sept 1).
Flat shallow water (hip-depth up to 200–300m) before the sandbar — ideal for beginners and freestyle. Beyond the sandbar: deeper IJsselmeer with short choppy waves up to 1m in strong winds. Foil excellent both in the shallows and beyond. Consistent conditions year-round.

⚠️ East wind = offshore — unstable and dangerous, water drags you onto the IJsselmeer. Sandbar is sometimes very shallow in winter (30cm when IJsselmeer is drained for rainfall management). Crowded in school holidays — red flag system when 150 kites reached. Keep clear of the buoy-marked swimming zone in the middle of the beach.
