Makkum / IJsselmeer is a popular kitesurf spot on the southwestern IJsselmeer shore in Friesland, between Workum and Kornwerderzand. Inside the small bay: shallow flat water ideal for beginners and learners. Outside the bay: deeper water suitable for foiling and freeride. Popular with German visitors — major kitesurf destination in summer.
⚠️ No sandy beach — launch directly from the water. Stay within yellow buoys (N side = Natura 2000 nesting reserve). NE wind = offshore — do not launch. Recommended October–March for consistent wind; summer open too. Kiteschools on site. Good facilities in Makkum village (2km). Best for N/NW/W/SW wind.
