Overview

Capo Peloro (Punta del Faro) is located at the extreme north-eastern tip of Sicily, at the entrance to the Strait of Messina. This spectacular spot offers a direct view of Calabria, only 3 km across the strait. The strong currents of the strait and the channelled winds make it a technical and powerful spot.

The spot is renowned for its windy conditions thanks to the Venturi effect of the Strait of Messina which accelerates the winds. The sailing area is on the sandy beach east of the lighthouse (Torre Faro). This is a spot for experienced kiters due to the significant currents.

Parking
Parking possible along the coastal road near Torre Faro. Some free but limited spaces. In summer, paid car parks are set up near the beach.
Wind specificities
The Venturi effect of the Strait of Messina considerably accelerates winds. The Maestrale (NW) and Sirocco (SE) are channelled by the strait and can be 30-50% stronger than elsewhere on the coast. Winds are often more sustained and more regular thanks to this channelling effect.
Hazards
Very strong currents in the Strait of Messina, among the most powerful in the Mediterranean. Navigation prohibited in the strait channel (intense maritime traffic). Currents can change direction rapidly. Spot reserved for experienced riders. Rocks along the coast.
