Fontainebleau State Park is an ideal beginner kitesurf spot located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, near Mandeville. This state park offers a sandy beach with progressive access to the very shallow lake waters. The sandy bottom and reduced depth (you can stand far from shore) make it one of the best learning spots in Louisiana. The park has good facilities: parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and camping.
Open all year round
Beginner
Very shallow Lake Pontchartrain water, you can stand for a great distance. Clean sandy bottom. Flat water, perfect for learning and freestyle. Brackish water, warm in summer (28-30°C). No tides. South fetch can generate some chop in strong winds, but conditions remain very manageable.
Sudden tropical thunderstorms with lightning — monitor weather. Alligators present in the park and adjacent bayous, stay vigilant. Occasional jellyfish. The lake can become rough in strong winds despite initially calm appearances. State park entrance fee required.
