Pontchartrain Beach is a historic kitesurf spot on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans. The former site of the Pontchartrain Beach amusement park now offers lake access with a long waterfront. The spot benefits from good fetch from the north and northeast thanks to the lake's vastness. Shallow waters and the absence of tides create accessible conditions for intermediate riders.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Shallow Lake Pontchartrain water with sandy bottom. Flat to choppy depending on wind. Brackish and warm water in summer (28-30°C). North fetch can create short chop. No significant current or tide. Regular and predictable conditions, good for progression.
Frequent tropical thunderstorms in summer with intense lightning — leave the water immediately. Alligators reported in the area, stay vigilant. Floating debris possible after rains. The lake can go from calm to rough in a short time. Watch for submerged structures from the former amusement park.
