This bay offers natural protection from open lake waves, creating a calmer water body for riding. The area is near the Straits of Mackinac and benefits from regular winds channeled by the geography. Wild natural setting with little urban development.

Sturgeon Bay water body on Lake Michigan, sheltered and offering flat water to moderate chop conditions. Bay protects from open lake waves. Very cold water — thick full wetsuit required, drysuit recommended in spring and fall. Sandy bottom. Winds channeled by the nearby Straits of Mackinac offer regular conditions.

Hazards

Very cold water with hypothermia risk. Currents possible at the bay entrance. Submerged rocks in some areas. Commercial shipping offshore in the Straits of Mackinac. Sparsely populated area with limited rescue services. Violent thunderstorms possible in summer. Cell phone coverage may be limited.
