Kelly Ave is a kitesurf spot located in Gulfport on the Mississippi Sound coast. The launch is from the rebuilt sand beach along US-90, a wide strip of white sand facing the shallow waters of the Sound. The offshore barrier islands (Ship Island, Cat Island) protect the area from large Gulf of Mexico swells, creating a relatively calm body of water ideal for progression. The area offers good fetch for south and southeast winds, the dominant summer directions.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Shallow Mississippi Sound water with sandy bottom. Flat to slightly choppy conditions depending on wind strength. The offshore barrier islands attenuate Gulf swells. Warm water in summer (28-30°C), mild in winter (12-16°C). Average visibility, water can be murky after rains.
Watch for jellyfish in summer, particularly numerous some years. Tidal currents possible near passes between barrier islands. Lightning and thunderstorms frequent in summer with rapid approach. The bottom may have hidden debris. Boat traffic in the Gulfport ship channel (commercial port).
