Polo Beach is located in the Wailea area south of Kihei on Maui's south coast. This spot sits in an upscale neighborhood with luxury resorts. Trade winds are channeled and accelerated by the Haleakala massif, blowing from the north/northeast in the afternoon. The spot is slightly more exposed to summer south swells than the Kihei beaches further north. The white sand beach provides easy water access. Conditions are suitable for intermediate riders in moderate winds.
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Water is relatively flat near shore with chop further out. South swell possible in summer (May-September), adding waves. Moderate lateral currents possible. Area shared with swimmers and snorkelers from nearby resorts.

Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported off Wailea. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. South swell possible in summer.
