Kamaole Park 1 (Kam 1) is the first of three Kamaole beaches lined along the south coast of Kihei, Maui. Like its neighbors Kam 2 and Kam 3, this spot benefits from trade winds channeled and accelerated by the Haleakala massif (3,055 m / 10,023 ft), creating a powerful venturi effect in the afternoon. Wind blows from the north/northeast, side-shore to side-onshore relative to the west-facing beach. The sandy beach offers easy launching and the water is accessible to intermediate riders. Kam 1 has full amenities: showers, restrooms, parking, and shaded parks.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra or rashguard is sufficient. The bottom is sandy near shore with coral reef further out. Water is relatively flat near the beach with moderate chop further offshore. Conditions are very similar to Kam 2 and Kam 3. Moderate lateral currents possible in strong winds. Swimming area shared with tourists — stay vigilant.
Shallow coral reef offshore — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present on the reef. Very busy beach with swimmers and tourists — be vigilant when launching and landing. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported off Kihei. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Lateral currents in strong winds.
