Sombrero Beach is a popular kitesurfing spot located in Marathon in the Middle Keys, facing the Atlantic Ocean. This beautiful public beach with its white sand and turquoise waters offers an idyllic setting. The spot benefits from a south-facing exposure that captures the easterly trade winds as side-shore and south winds as onshore. The beach is spacious with good launching space. Marathon is the heart of the Keys with all services nearby, making Sombrero Beach an excellent spot for intermediate riders looking to enjoy moderate ocean conditions in a paradise setting.
The water body faces the Atlantic with partial protection offered by Sombrero Reef offshore. The bottom is sandy with a gentle slope. In easterly trade winds, conditions offer a mix of chop and small waves. In south winds, a more pronounced swell can come in with waves of 1.5-5 feet. The water is warm and crystal clear year-round. The tide influences depth near shore — at low tide, sand bars can emerge, creating protected flat water areas.

Tidal currents can be significant, particularly near the passes between islands. Watch for underwater rocks and coral reefs in certain offshore areas. The swimming zone must be respected. In northerly winds, conditions become offshore and dangerous — do not ride. Sun protection is essential. Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish may be present, especially in summer.
