Overview

Coyote Point is a kitesurfing spot located at Coyote Point Recreation Area on the west shore of San Francisco Bay in San Mateo County, California. This popular bay spot benefits from powerful northwest thermal winds that cross the bay from May through October. The park offers good facilities with parking, lawn for rigging, and easy water access. It is one of the most popular bay spots in the area.

On the water

Bay-style water body with moderate to heavy chop on windy days. Water is cold (11-16°C/52-61°F), a 4/3 or 3/2 wetsuit is necessary. Muddy bottom. Moderate tidal currents. Significant mudflats at low tide reducing rideable area — check tide schedules. Thermal wind creates short, regular chop.

Hazards

Extensive mudflats at low tide — risk of getting stuck. Tidal currents in the bay. Proximity to San Francisco International Airport — low-altitude air traffic. Maritime traffic (ferries, cargo ships). Cold water — wetsuit necessary year-round. Frequent fog reducing visibility. Park entry fee required.
