Varkiza is a spot on the Athenian Riviera just east of Vouliagmeni, on the south coast of Attica. Varkiza beach is one of the largest on the south coast of Athens, offering more space for kitesurfing than the more urban spots further west.
The spot works with the S/SSW thermal sea breeze and offers relatively flat water in the Saronic Gulf. Slightly more exposed position than Vouliagmeni, with sometimes a bit more chop.
Sessions from 2 PM to 7 PM with the S/SSW thermal. The large beach allows easier launching than the more cramped Riviera spots. Works from May to September. Sailing zone generally more spacious than neighboring spots, allowing more comfortable riding.
Saronic Gulf water, slightly more exposed than Vouliagmeni. Small chop in moderate thermal. Sandy bottom, progressive depth. Clean, warm water (23-27°C in summer). Fetch limited by the gulf islands.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Large car park at the organized Varkiza beach (paid in summer). Additional spaces along the coastal road. Bus accessible from Athens. Beach facilities (showers, changing rooms, restaurants). More parking space than the Voula and Kavouri spots.
Many swimmers in summer, respect swimming zones. Maritime traffic in the gulf. With NE wind, side-offshore conditions. Some rocks at beach extremities. Jet-skis and rental boats in summer.
Dominant S/SSW "Embatis" thermal breeze, 12-18 knots in the afternoon in summer. Varkiza's more open beach receives the thermal more directly than nearby protected bays. Wind can be slightly stronger here than at Vouliagmeni due to the absence of protective capes.
In strong Meltemi, NE can reach this coast as side-offshore. Transitions between thermal and Meltemi can create changing conditions in late afternoon.
