Pozo Izquierdo is the centre of the Gran Canaria windsurfing and kitesurfing scene and one of the most iconic wind sports spots in Europe. Home to the PWA World Cup for decades, this stony beach on the SE coast is where world champions train and compete.
The island's circular geography and 2000m mountains create a powerful acceleration effect that channels and amplifies the NE trade wind along the east coast. Pozo receives some of the strongest and most consistent winds in the Canaries — 15–30+ knots regularly, sometimes exceeding 40 knots in summer.
Conditions are challenging: strong cross-shore to side-offshore wind, powerful waves breaking on a rocky shore, strong currents. This is a spot for experienced riders with excellent jump and wave riding conditions. The beach is stony (not sandy), and entry/exit requires care.
Pozowinds PRO Center — windsurf/kite centre right at Pozo. Fanatic Boarders Centre at Bahía Feliz organizes excursions. AKBC (Association Kiteboard Canarias).
Pozo is primarily a jump and wave spot. Waves come from the north, wind blows NE cross-shore to side-offshore = perfect for jumping off waves and wave riding.
Zoned: windsurfers dominate the main area. Kitesurfers ride more to the south (downwind). Check local rules.
Schools and rental at Pozo: Pozowinds PRO Center, Fanatic Boarders Centre (based at Bahía Feliz, excursions to Pozo).
Open all year round
Year-round. PWA World Cup held annually (summer). Peak wind May–Sept.
