Port Melbourne is an urban kitesurfing spot located on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, in close proximity to Melbourne's city centre, Victoria. It is one of Melbourne's most accessible kitesurfing spots, offering after-work sessions for city riders. The sandy beach is wide and the bay waters offer generally calm conditions.
The prevailing southwest to west winds blow side-onshore on this south-facing beach. Melbourne's famous "Southerly" creates reliable conditions, particularly in summer. The water is flat to slightly choppy, suited for beginners and intermediates. The spot is very popular with Melbourne's kite community.
Access is excellent with tram and parking nearby. Watch out for swimming zones, swimmers and boats entering/leaving Melbourne port. The spot may be closed during certain maritime events.
