Overview

Mount Maunganui is one of the most renowned kitesurfing spots in the Bay of Plenty and in all of New Zealand. Dominated by Mauao, an ancient volcanic cone of 232 metres, this spot offers a long white sand beach facing north towards the Pacific Ocean. Tauranga Harbour, located on the other side of the peninsula, offers flat water sailing conditions, making it a versatile spot suited to all conditions.

The prevailing winds blow from the NE and E, creating onshore to side-onshore conditions on the ocean beach. The harbour works with a wider range of wind directions. The Bay of Plenty coast enjoys a subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. The best season runs from October to April.

The spot offers varied conditions: waves on the ocean beach for experienced riders, flat water in the harbour for beginners and wingfoiling. Several kitesurfing schools operate in the area, particularly from Ferguson Park and Kulim Park. The town of Mount Maunganui is a major tourist destination with hot pools at the foot of Mauao, restaurants, cafes and a lively nightlife.
