Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand and offers a unique setting for freshwater kitesurfing in the heart of the North Island, in the Waikato region. Located at 356 metres altitude in a volcanic caldera, this immense lake is surrounded by spectacular volcanic landscapes with the snow-capped peaks of Tongariro National Park as a backdrop. It is one of the most popular freshwater spots in the country.
The main kitesurfing spots on the lake include Waitetoko Beach on the south shore, ideal for intermediate levels with a large grassy area perfect for self-launching, and Wharewaka Point which works best with south to southwest winds. The dominant wind is from the south with west winds in cross-shore offering the best conditions. In winter, south winds are strong and consistent, while in summer thermals offer lighter sessions.
Lake Taupo is suitable for beginner to intermediate kitesurfers depending on conditions. The freshwater and absence of tides simplify the experience, but the lake can become choppy with strong chop in sustained winds. The water is cold, especially in winter, requiring a good wetsuit. The region also offers many geothermal activities, natural hot springs and hiking opportunities, making Taupo an ideal destination for combining kitesurfing and tourism.
