Awarua Bay is a kitesurfing spot located in Southland, on the south coast of the South Island of New Zealand, east of Invercargill. This large shallow bay, bordering the Foveaux Strait, offers flat to choppy water conditions depending on the wind. The spot is relatively sheltered compared to neighbouring ocean beaches like Oreti Beach. The prevailing winds come from the west and southwest, typical of the Southland region. The shallow bay offers calmer conditions than the open ocean, suitable for intermediate kitesurfers. The water is cold and a 4/3 wetsuit is necessary. The spot is isolated with few facilities.
