Glenorchy is a kitesurfing spot located at the head of Lake Wakatipu, in the Otago region, at 310 metres altitude. This picturesque village, surrounded by majestic mountains, is famous as a filming location for The Lord of the Rings and offers a spectacular setting for kitesurfing. The prevailing winds are channelled by the Lake Wakatipu valley. The northwest wind (Nor'wester) descends from the mountains with force and can be very gusty. Southwest thermal winds travel up the lake in the afternoon. The lake is long and narrow, creating a venturi effect. The water is very cold. No tides. Spot for advanced riders due to gusts and cold water.
