Monkey Island is a kitesurfing spot located on the south coast of Southland, west of Riverton, on the South Island of New Zealand. The spot gets its name from a small rocky islet located just offshore. This wild beach is exposed to the prevailing west and southwest winds of the Roaring Forties, offering consistent windy conditions. The spot is suitable for intermediate to advanced kitesurfers. West and southwest winds are the most frequent, often strong. The beach offers good launching space on the sand. The water is cold, requiring a full wetsuit. The natural setting is spectacular with wild coastal landscapes typical of Southland.
