Marmari / Kos

Overview

Marmari is a kitesurfing spot on the north coast of Kos, between Tingaki and Mastichari. This long sandy beach benefits from direct exposure to the northern Meltemi with shallow water over a large distance, making it an excellent spot for beginners and kite lessons. Marmari village offers a relaxed atmosphere with a few tavernas and accommodations near the beach. The spot combines the reliable wind of the north coast with a less crowded environment than Tingaki.

Technical details of Marmari / Kos spot

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

Marmari works with the onshore N/NNW Meltemi on the north coast of Kos. Shallow water over a large distance (similar to Tingaki) creates a safe riding area for learning. Onshore wind systematically brings riders back to the beach. Less crowded than Tingaki, offering more space. Some kite schools operate on this beach. Advanced riders sail further out in the chop. Works from June to September.

On the water

Turquoise Aegean Sea water, 22-26°C in summer. Lycra or 2mm shorty sufficient. Sandy bottom, very shallow water for the first 100-150 meters. Moderate chop further out, increasing with Meltemi strength. Weak to moderate current along the coast. Reassuring conditions for beginners thanks to shallow depth.

Parking

Free parking along the coastal road at Marmari. Easy access from the main Kos Town - Mastichari road. Dirt parking spaces by the beach. Less parking pressure than at Tingaki or Mastichari in high season.

Hazards

Generally safe spot. Meltemi can build to 25+ knots, surprising for beginners. Some swimmers in high season — maintain distances. Weak lateral current along the coast. Strong sun exposure — sun protection and hydration essential. Some sea urchins possible on the bottom.

Wind specificities

Marmari receives the Meltemi from N/NNW directly on the north coast, onshore to side-onshore. Its position between Tingaki and Mastichari gives it a good wind strength compromise — windier than Tingaki thanks to increasing proximity to Kalymnos, without reaching Mastichari's extremes. Typical strength of 15-25 knots in summer. Steady wind with the classic cycle: building toward noon, peaking in afternoon, dropping in evening. Season from June to September, very reliable in July-August.
