Amoudara is a long sand beach just west of Heraklion, the capital of Crete. It's the most accessible kite spot in the Heraklion area, directly on the edge of the urban zone. The north-facing beach fully receives the Meltemi.
The spot is well-windy in summer with classic onshore conditions. Proximity to the airport and city makes it a convenient spot for kitesurfers passing through Heraklion.
Launching from the sand beach. Tourist area – respect swimmers and marked zones. Find a launch space away from parasols. Water sports schools may be present in season.
Works from June to September. Convenient for stopovers in Heraklion.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Open water with onshore chop. Sandy bottom, progressive depth. Waves possible in sustained wind. Clear water, 23-26°C in summer.
Parking along the Amoudara coastal road. Urbanized area with hotels, restaurants and shops. Direct access from Heraklion (5km). Heraklion airport nearby.
Onshore Meltemi from N/NNW, typically 15-25 knots from June to September. This north coast section is well exposed to the Meltemi. Wind can blow from NW to NNE depending on the day. Good reliability in peak summer.
Heraklion airport is nearby – airport windsocks give a good wind indication.
Very busy tourist zone – strictly respect swimmers. Parasols and sunbeds limiting launch space. Coastal current possible. Maritime traffic (Heraklion port nearby). Airport proximity – do not fly kites too high.
