Chiona Beach is a wild beach located just south of Kouremenos, near Palekastro in eastern Crete. Less crowded than its famous neighbor, it offers a preserved setting with a long stretch of sand and pebbles facing the Carpathian Sea.
Wind conditions are similar to Kouremenos: the Meltemi arrives channeled from the NW/WNW as side-onshore. However, the slightly more open exposure creates choppier water, making it more suited to intermediate and advanced riders.
Spot operational from June to September with the Meltemi. No kite school on site (schools are based at Kouremenos). Launching from sand/pebble beach. Generous sailing space without crowding.
Recommended for autonomous riders seeking more space and fewer people than at Kouremenos. Good wave conditions in strong Meltemi for wave-riding.
Choppier water than Kouremenos with formed chop and small waves in sustained wind. Sand and pebble bottom. Progressive depth but quickly reaches deeper zones.
Good conditions for wave-riding and bump & jump in strong Meltemi. Crystal clear water typical of eastern Crete. Summer temperature 23-26°C.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Roadside parking along the beach. Access via a dirt road from Palekastro. Few facilities on site – bring water and supplies. Palekastro village is about 3km away.
No supervision or rescue service. Isolated spot – sailing with a buddy is recommended. Coastal current southward in strong Meltemi. Possible submerged rocks near rocky headlands.
Pebbles on the beach – shoes recommended. Rapid dehydration in the Cretan wind and sun. No facilities on site.
Same Meltemi regime as Kouremenos, channeled between Crete and the Dodecanese. Wind arrives from NW/WNW as side-onshore, 15-25 knots from June to September. The more open exposure compared to Kouremenos can produce slightly windier conditions.
Wind is consistent in the afternoon. Possibility of stronger gusts than Kouremenos due to surrounding terrain. Excellent reliability in peak summer.
