Gialova is an exceptional spot in the Gialova lagoon, north of Navarino Bay (Pylos), in southwestern Peloponnese (Messenia). The lagoon offers ultra-flat, shallow water, protected from open sea waves, making it one of the best flat water spots in all of Greece.
Navarino Bay is historically famous (Battle of Navarino, 1827) and today for the Costa Navarino resort complex. Gialova lagoon is a protected Natura 2000 site, hosting remarkable biodiversity. Sailing conditions are ideal for beginners and freestyle.
The spot works from May to October. The lagoon water is ultra-flat and shallow (50cm-1m over large areas), perfect for learning kite and wingfoil. Best sessions are in the afternoon with the NW thermal. ⚠️ The lagoon is a Natura 2000 site — respect wildlife (flamingos, herons, turtles) and do not disturb sensitive areas.
Ultra-flat water of the Gialova lagoon — one of the best flat water spots in Greece! Depth of 50cm to 1.5m over most of the lagoon. Sand and mud bottom. Warm water (25-28°C in summer in the shallow lagoon). No significant waves or chop. Ideal conditions for freestyle and foil.

Parking near the lagoon and along the road between Gialova and Pylos. Gialova village offers restaurants, hotels, and tourist services. Costa Navarino resort nearby. Pylos 5 min away offers all services. Access from Kalamata (1.5h) or Patras (3h).
⚠️ Natura 2000 site — sailing may be regulated to protect wildlife. Check with locals about authorized zones. Muddy bottom — some areas can be very shallow. Do not walk on seagrass beds. No open-sea danger but respect the lagoon's fragile environment.
The dominant wind is the NW/W Maestro, channeled between Messenia's mountains and arriving onshore to side-onshore at the lagoon. Typical strength: 12-20 knots in summer. The W/NW thermal breeze develops reliably in the afternoon thanks to the significant land-sea gradient in this area.
With S/SW wind (depressions, autumn), conditions are also rideable but with more chop in the lagoon. The lagoon's natural protection attenuates gusts.
