Angelohori is a spot on the southern peninsula of the Thermaikos Gulf, southwest of Thessaloniki, between the Thermaikos Gulf and the Gulf of Thessaloniki. This strategic position on a peninsula offers multi-directional wind exposure. The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the dominant wind, reinforced by the gulf's funneling effect. The spot is one of the most popular in the Thessaloniki area for kitesurfing, with large stretches of sandy beach and varied conditions.
Launch from the long sandy beach. In Vardaris (N/NNW), the wind is side-shore — excellent riding conditions along the coast. In Ostria (SE), the wind is onshore — ideal for beginners and freestyle. The wide beach offers plenty of rigging space. Open sailing area on the gulf with flat water in moderate conditions. Popular spot — respect other users and swimming zones.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Flat to moderate chop depending on wind and fetch. In Vardaris (side-shore), chop remains moderate with limited lateral fetch. In Ostria (SE onshore), chop can develop with the gulf fetch. Progressive depth, shallow areas appreciated by beginners. Clean and pleasant water, warm temperature in summer.
Access from Thessaloniki via the coastal road to Angelohori (about 30 minutes). Large parking area near the beach. Well-developed zone, one of the most accessible spots in the area. Some tavernas and services nearby.
Prime position on the peninsula between two gulfs. The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the main wind, descending the Vardar valley with remarkable power. At Angelohori, it arrives side-shore on the east coast of the peninsula. The SE wind (Ostria) rises up the gulf and offers a reliable secondary regime in summer. South/south-southwesterly winds can also reach the spot by wrapping around the peninsula. The peninsula position allows finding a rideable wind angle in most conditions.
Potentially very powerful Vardaris (30-50 knots possible) — assess your skills carefully. Swimmers in summer — maintain safe distance. Possible current along the coast in strong wind. Maritime traffic towards Thessaloniki port — stay in the coastal zone. Popular spot — watch for other kiters.
