Azalas is a spot on the east coast of Naxos, facing the open Aegean Sea toward the Small Cyclades. This atypical spot for Naxos faces east, receiving the N/NNE Meltemi side-shore from the left. The east coast of Naxos is less known for kiting than the west coast, but Azalas offers interesting conditions in good Meltemi. The setting is wild and uncrowded. The spot is reserved for advanced riders able to handle side-shore wind in an environment without rescue.
Azalas works with the N/NNE Meltemi side-shore on the east coast. Open riding area to the east. Totally self-sufficient spot. Warning: wind pushes offshore — do not sail here without perfectly mastering upwind riding. No kite center or rescue.
Open all year round
Advanced
Open Aegean Sea, 22-26°C. 2mm shorty. Sand/rock bottom. Chop to waves depending on fetch. Current possible.
Difficult access via secondary roads and tracks. Limited roadside parking. No infrastructure. Vehicle suited for rough terrain recommended.
The N/NNE Meltemi arrives side-shore from the left on this east coast. Wind can be disturbed by Naxos' relief (Mt Zeus 1004m) to the west, creating possible turbulence. When the Meltemi is well established, strength is 15-22 knots. Less consistent than the directly exposed west coast. Side-shore wind pushes offshore (toward the Small Cyclades) — upwind riding ability essential.
Side-shore wind pushing offshore — major risk of drift into open sea. Very isolated spot with no rescue. Potentially gusty wind. Rocks. Current. Reserved for very experienced riders who must sail with a partner. The most dangerous spot on Naxos.
